Before you fly

Sort the health side properly, and the trip is the only thing left to think about.

You've booked the flights and the rooms, and somewhere on the list are the vaccinations and the pre-travel advice. It's the bit that tends to slide, right up until departure is close and you're not quite sure what you actually need for where you're going.

A pre-travel consultation takes it off your plate in one go. A GP looks at your itinerary, your health and what you'll be doing, then sorts the vaccinations and advice that fit your trip, and nothing you don't need. You leave covered and ready, so the only thing left to organise is the holiday.

travel vaccinations Paddington

What a pre-travel consultation and travel vaccinations involve.

A pre-travel consultation is an appointment where a GP reviews your itinerary, your health and your medical history, then recommends the vaccinations, antimalarials and practical advice tailored to where you are going. You leave knowing exactly what you need before you fly, and why.

Every trip is different. A week in a European city asks for very little. A few months through rural Asia, Africa or South America asks for a lot more. That is the point of seeing a GP before you go: instead of guessing, you get advice built around your real plans, your destinations, the time of year, what you will be doing, and your own health and past vaccinations.

In one unhurried appointment, your GP works through what your trip needs: which vaccinations make sense, whether malaria prevention applies, what to pack in case of tummy trouble, and how to manage any ongoing conditions or medications while you are away. If your destination requires a Yellow Fever certificate to enter, your GP will talk you through that too.

What a pre-travel consultation covers

  • A review of your itinerary, destinations and travel dates
  • A check of your health, medications and past vaccinations
  • Recommended travel vaccinations for where you are going
  • Malaria prevention advice and prevention tablets, where they apply
  • Practical advice on food, water, insect bites and staying well
  • Any entry-requirement vaccinations and certificates your destinations ask for

Yellow Fever vaccination and certificates

Some countries ask for proof of Yellow Fever vaccination before they will let you enter, and others ask for it if you are arriving from a country where Yellow Fever is present. If your trip involves a destination that requires it, talk to us when you book your pre-travel consultation and we will let you know what is needed and how we can help.

Book around six to eight weeks before you travel where you can. Some vaccinations need time to take effect, and a few are given as a short course. If your trip is sooner than that, still come in: there is almost always something useful we can do, even at short notice. Bring your itinerary and a record of any past vaccinations if you have one.

how it works

Booking your travel consultation is simple.

Book a travel consult online through AutoMed, or call reception on (02) 9072 1660. Try to book six to eight weeks before you travel, though we will do what we can at shorter notice.

Bring your itinerary and any record of past vaccinations. Your GP reviews your trip and your health, then recommends the vaccinations and advice you need, and gives any vaccinations you can have on the day.

You leave ready, with a clear plan, any certificates you need, and the same practice to come back to if anything comes up before you go or after you are home.

Who's it for?

A pre-travel consultation is for anyone with a trip booked who wants to be ready for it: holidaymakers, families heading off together, and travellers planning something longer or further afield. If your trip is a short city break with nothing exotic on the itinerary, you may not need much at all, and we will tell you that honestly. The point is simple: travel well, and come home well.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far ahead should I book my travel vaccinations?

Around six to eight weeks before you travel is ideal. Some vaccinations take time to take full effect, and a few are given as a short course over several weeks. If your trip is sooner, still book in, there is usually something useful we can do even close to departure.

Which travel vaccinations do I need?

It depends on where you are going, what you will be doing and what you have had before. In your pre-travel consultation your GP reviews your itinerary and recommends a clear list tailored to your trip, with nothing you do not need.

Can I get a Yellow Fever vaccine and certificate in Paddington?

Some countries require proof of Yellow Fever vaccination to enter. If your destination asks for it, talk to us when you book your pre-travel consultation and we will let you know what is needed and how we can help.

Do I need malaria tablets?

Only if your trip takes you into an area where malaria is present, and that varies by country, region and time of year. Your GP will tell you whether it applies to your route, and if it does, talk you through prevention tablets and simple ways to avoid bites.

How much does a travel consultation cost?

It depends on the length of the appointment and which vaccinations you need. A Medicare rebate applies to many consultations, and every fee, including rebates, is published on our fees page at paddingtondoctors.com/fees.

Do I need a referral to see a travel doctor?

No. You do not need a referral to book a pre-travel consultation. Book online through AutoMed or call reception on (02) 9072 1660.
