While it's on your mind

A spot you've been watching is worth a calm, proper look.

Around here, the sun comes with the life. The beach before work, the Bondi to Bronte walk, years on the water and the sports field. It adds up, and most of us don't think much about what our skin has quietly taken on along the way.

Maybe there's a spot you've half-noticed, maybe your partner has been nudging you, or maybe it's simply been too long. None of it needs to be a worry. A skin check is a calm, unhurried appointment, and the sooner it becomes a habit, the easier everything stays. You don't need a reason. Peace of mind is reason enough.

What a skin cancer check at Paddington Doctors involves.

A skin cancer check at Paddington Doctors is a thorough head-to-toe examination of your skin by a GP. Using dermoscopy, your doctor examines your moles and any spots of concern, explains what they find, and if anything needs a closer look, can arrange a biopsy or a minor procedure on site, with a clear plan to follow.

A full skin check is unhurried and methodical. Your GP works through your skin systematically, including the areas that are easy to miss and hard to see yourself. A dermoscope, the handheld magnifier your doctor uses, lets them look beneath the surface of a mole or spot, so the assessment is far more than a glance. You're welcome to point out anything that has changed or that's been on your mind, and to ask about anything you'd like to understand better.

If your GP finds something worth a closer look, they'll talk you through the options before anything happens. That might mean keeping a spot under review, taking a small sample (a biopsy) for testing, or removing it with a minor procedure. Where it's appropriate to do so, much of this can be handled here at the practice, so you're not sent from place to place. You leave knowing where things stand and what happens next.

Who's it for?

Skin checks are for anyone who has spent time in the Australian sun, which around here is just about everyone. They're especially worth making a habit if you've had a lot of sun over the years, you have fair skin, lots of moles, or a family history of skin cancer. If you've noticed a spot that's changed, come in sooner rather than later. And if you're simply due for a look and want the peace of mind, you're exactly who this is for.

Active Retirees

Staying well takes a bit of attention now, the regular check-ins, the vaccinations, keeping an eye on what matters at your age. You want a steady GP who knows your history and helps you stay independent and active for as long as possible. That continuity is what we are built on.

Active & Sporty Types

You train, you play, and staying active matters. Whether it is a niggling injury, your energy and recovery, or keeping your body working well, you want a GP who sees the whole picture. One of our doctors came to general practice from physiotherapy, and understands an active body.

Beaches and the outdoors are part of life here, and so is the sun your skin has clocked over the years. Maybe there is a spot you have been watching, or it has just been too long. A skin check with a GP is simple, a clear answer and anything worth acting on caught early.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens during a skin check?

Your GP does a thorough head-to-toe examination of your skin, looking closely at your moles and any spots of concern using a dermoscope (a handheld magnifier). They explain what they find as they go, and if anything needs a closer look, they can arrange a biopsy or a minor procedure. You leave with a clear plan for what happens next.

How much does a skin check cost?

Paddington Doctors is a private practice, and a Medicare rebate applies to many consultations. Every fee, including rebates, is published on our fees page at paddingtondoctors.com/fees, so you can check the cost before you book.

How often should I have a skin check?

As a general guide, once a year suits most people, and more often if you have fair skin, lots of moles, plenty of past sun, or a family history of skin cancer. Your GP will let you know what rhythm makes sense for you after your first check.

Can my GP remove a mole or spot on site?

In many cases, yes. If a mole or spot needs removing or testing, your GP can often take a small sample (a biopsy) or perform a minor procedure at the practice, and will talk you through it first. Where something needs further care, they'll arrange it and stay involved.

Do I need a referral for a skin check?

No. You don't need a referral to book a skin check with a GP. Book online through AutoMed or call reception on (02) 9072 1660.

What should I do if I've noticed a spot that's changed?

Book a skin check sooner rather than later. A spot that has changed in size, shape or colour is easy to look at, and most of the time it's reassurance you walk away with. Your GP can examine it, explain what they think, and arrange anything further if it's needed.
