Putting yourself last

You shouldn't have to push through tiredness just to get through the week.

If you're the one who books everyone else's appointments and puts your own off, low iron is easy to keep ignoring. The tiredness, the foggy head, the breathlessness on stairs you used to take two at a time, it creeps in slowly and becomes your baseline, until pushing through is simply what you do.

It doesn't have to be how you feel. A simple blood test can show whether low iron is part of the picture, and a GP can look at why it ran low in the first place. That's the part worth getting to, so anything that can be addressed actually gets addressed, properly.

iron infusion Paddington

What an iron infusion actually is, in plain terms.

An iron infusion is iron given gently into a vein through a drip, used to restore your iron levels when tablets aren't enough or don't agree with you. At Paddington Doctors it's only done after a GP consultation and a blood test to confirm you have iron deficiency, so it's the right treatment for you.

Iron deficiency is one of the most common reasons people feel exhausted, and it's especially common in women, often from heavy periods, pregnancy, a plant-based diet, or simply not absorbing enough from food. Iron tablets are usually the first step, but they don't suit everyone. Some people can't tolerate them, some don't absorb them well, and some need their iron restored faster than tablets allow. An iron infusion delivers a full dose of iron in one appointment, which the body then uses to rebuild its stores over the following weeks.

An infusion isn't a wellness drip or a quick pick-me-up. It's a medical treatment for diagnosed iron deficiency, which is why the assessment comes first. Your GP confirms that low iron is the cause of how you're feeling, checks it's safe and suitable for you, and orders the infusion if it's the right call.

What to expect on the day

  • An assessment first. Before any infusion, you'll have a GP consultation and a blood test to confirm iron deficiency and check an infusion is suitable.
  • The appointment. The infusion itself usually takes around 30 to 60 minutes, given slowly through a small drip in your arm by our nursing team, with you sitting comfortably the whole time.
  • You can usually drive home. Most people feel fine afterwards and carry on with their day, though we'll keep an eye on you for a short while before you leave.
  • A follow-up blood test. A few weeks later, a simple blood test checks your iron has come back up and helps your GP work out how to keep it there.

how it works

Getting an iron infusion here is straightforward.

1. Book an assessment. Book a GP assessment online through AutoMed, or call reception on (02) 9072 1660. Your GP reviews your symptoms and arranges a blood test to check your iron.

2. Confirm and plan. If your blood test confirms iron deficiency and an infusion is suitable, your GP explains what to expect and books you in. If something else is going on, they'll guide you on the right next step instead.

3. Have your infusion. Our nursing team gives your infusion over around 30 to 60 minutes while you sit comfortably. You can usually head home afterwards, with a follow-up blood test a few weeks later to check your levels.

Low iron has a way of creeping up on you.

Iron deficiency rarely announces itself. It builds slowly, and it's easy to put down to a busy life. If a few of these sound familiar, it's worth a conversation and a simple blood test.

Who's it for?

An iron infusion is for people whose iron is genuinely low and who need it restored, when tablets haven't done the job or aren't an option. It's not a wellness top-up or an energy boost for its own sake. If your iron is fine, an infusion won't help, which is exactly why we test first. If it is low, this is one of the most effective ways to put it right.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the side effects of an iron infusion?

Most people tolerate iron infusions well, and any side effects are usually mild and short-lived. Some people notice a headache, nausea, a metallic taste, or aching joints or muscles for a day or two. One uncommon but important risk is skin staining at the drip site, a brownish mark on the skin if a little iron leaks out, which is why our nurses place and watch the drip carefully and stop straight away if there's any concern. As with any infusion, a serious reaction is rare, and we monitor you throughout and for a short time afterwards for exactly that reason. Your GP will talk you through the risks for your situation before you go ahead.

How long does an iron infusion take?

The infusion itself usually takes around 30 to 60 minutes, given slowly through a small drip in your arm. With check-in and a short period of monitoring afterwards, allow up to about an hour and a half at the clinic.

Do I need a blood test first?

Yes. An infusion is only given after a GP consultation and a blood test confirm you have iron deficiency and that an infusion is suitable for you. We don't give infusions without first checking they're the right treatment.

Can I drive home afterwards?

Most people feel fine and can drive home and carry on with their day. We keep an eye on you for a short while before you leave, and your GP or nurse will let you know if there's any reason to take it easy.

How much does an iron infusion cost?

The cost depends on your assessment and the iron product used, and a Medicare rebate applies to many consultations. Every fee, including rebates, is published on our fees page at paddingtondoctors.com/fees.

How soon will I feel better after an iron infusion?

It varies from person to person. Your body uses the iron to rebuild its stores over the following weeks, so any improvement tends to be gradual rather than instant. A follow-up blood test a few weeks later checks your iron has come back up.
